In 1970 I got a job teaching at then School of Fine and Applied Art, now the Maine College of Art and Design, in Portland, Maine. I put the 4x5 away for a while. For the first two years in Portland I exclusively used the Leica. I kept the 35mm lens at the hyperfocal distance, set at f16. Often I used the Leica almost as if it was a point and shoot camera. I drew on my grad student filmmaking experience to frame very fluidly. I tried to move, even dance, with who or what I was photographing.
